About this site
Aliwal Shoal is a fossilized dune reef lying a few kilometres off the coast at Umkomaas, south of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. It is best known for shark diving, with raggedy tooth sharks (sand tiger sharks) gathering seasonally in caves and gullies, and for the chance of tiger sharks and other pelagic species offshore. The site also includes the wreck of the Produce, a trawler that sank in the 1970s, adding structure and an additional focus for divers exploring the reef. Depths across the shoal generally range from around 5 to 30 metres, with much of the diving done between 12 and 20 metres, and the site is generally rated as a beginner dive. Divers here have also reported grouper, hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks, and even whales passing through the area.
