About this site
Banco Chinchorro is a large coral atoll off the coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico, in the Caribbean Sea south of the town of Mahahual. It is Mexico's largest coral atoll and lies within a biosphere reserve, with its reefs and surrounding shallows known for numerous shipwrecks that have run aground over the centuries. The atoll sits far offshore, requiring a lengthy boat crossing from the mainland to reach it.
