About this site
Beginish Island lies in the mouth of Valentia Harbour off the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, part of the Munster region on Ireland's southwest coast. The Basalt Cliffs site takes its name from the volcanic rock formations common to this stretch of coastline, dropping into the harbour approach near Valentia and Portmagee. Divers here have reported common bottlenose dolphins passing through, along with common sea stars, spiny starfish, and crab species including edible crab, European green crab, and velvet swimming crab along the rock and seabed.
