About this site
HMT Bedfordshire was a British armed trawler that served on anti-submarine patrol off the North Carolina coast during World War II. It was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-558 in May 1942 off Cape Lookout, with the loss of its entire crew. The wreck now lies broken and scattered on the sandy bottom in the waters off Cape Lookout, in a depth range commonly reported around 30 to 100 feet depending on the section visited. It is a popular stop on North Carolina wreck-diving trips out of Morehead City and Beaufort, often visited alongside other Graveyard of the Atlantic wrecks, and divers frequently encounter sand tiger sharks in the area along with other reef fish drawn to the structure.
