About this site
Big Fisherman's Cove sits on the leeward side of Santa Catalina Island, near the isthmus that separates the island's two halves, and is home to the USC Wrigley Marine Science Center. The cove is a protected marine reserve, part of a no-take zone, which has helped its kelp forest and fish life remain relatively undisturbed compared to more heavily fished areas of the island. Diving here typically means calm, sheltered conditions given the cove's enclosed shape, with kelp beds and rocky reef terrain common to Catalina's northern shore. Depths run to around 9 metres, and the site is rated a beginner dive, which fits its reputation as a popular training and research site thanks to its easy access and gentle conditions.
