About this site
Buraco do Inferno, meaning Hell's Hole, is a well known formation off Fernando de Noronha, the volcanic archipelago off Brazil's northeast coast. It takes the form of a natural chimney or sinkhole in the rock that divers descend through, opening out to the surrounding reef and blue water. The island group is known for clear water and encounters with spinner dolphins, turtles, and reef fish, and this site is often dived as a drift or a formation dive depending on conditions. Depths at the hole itself are moderate, generally in the range of a recreational dive, but surge and swell around the opening can make entry and exit tricky, so it is usually treated as a dive for divers with some experience rather than complete beginners.
