About this site
Canones lies along the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, in the stretch of reef and shoreline south of Playa del Carmen near Akumal and Tulum. This part of the coast is characterized by fringing coral reef running parallel to shore, with dive and snorkel sites typically reached by short boat rides from the nearby beach towns. The site sits over a reef bottom to a maximum depth of about 15 metres and is rated a beginner dive. Divers here have reported barracuda, dolphin, grouper, lobster, manta ray, and moray eel along the reef.
