About this site
La Poza sits within the Yucatan Peninsula's Quintana Roo coast, an area riddled with cenotes and freshwater sinkholes connected to the region's vast limestone aquifer system. The name translates roughly to "the pool" or "the pond" in Spanish, common for cenote entry points in this karst landscape. This part of the peninsula lies within the broader network of underground rivers that feed the Caribbean coastline near towns like Tulum and Puerto Aventuras. As a cave site, La Poza is rated an advanced dive, reaching a maximum depth of around 25 metres. Divers have also reported barracuda, jacks and amberjack, nurse sharks, snapper, stoplight parrotfish, yellowtail damselfish and Atlantic blue tang here, alongside coral formations including elkhorn, star, brain, and mustard hill coral.
