About this site
The Caribsea was a small American freighter torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1942 off the coast of North Carolina, one of many merchant ship losses during the U-boat campaign along the Outer Banks that year. The wreck now lies broken up on the sandy bottom off Cape Lookout, part of the stretch of coast sometimes called the Graveyard of the Atlantic. It sits in open water reached by boat out of Morehead City or Beaufort, and its scattered remains attract sand tiger sharks that gather around the site seasonally. Depths run to around 25 to 30 metres, and the site is generally dived by those comfortable with offshore boat diving and open ocean conditions.
