City of Washington

The City of Washington lies off Key Largo in the Florida Keys, close to the wreck of the Duane and Bibb in this stretch of the reef tract. It began as an iron-hulled steamship built in the 1870s that later served as a coal barge, and it sank in this area in the early twentieth century after a collision. What remains today is a low, scattered debris field rather than an intact hull, mostly encrusted plating and ribs spread across the sand. Depths run in the range typical of Key Largo's outer reef, generally in the shallow to mid range accessible to recreational divers. It tends to be dived as a secondary site alongside the more prominent nearby wrecks, and is considered an easier dive given its modest depth and lack of strong current.
