About this site
The Clan Stuart is the wreck of a British steamship that ran aground off Simon's Town in False Bay, near Cape Town, in 1914. It lies close to shore in shallow water, making it an easy dive and snorkel site accessible from the beach at Mackerel Bay, with a maximum depth of around 9 metres and a rating suited to beginners. The boiler and parts of the hull break the surface at low tide, and the broken iron remains are encrusted with soft corals and attract reef fish typical of False Bay. Divers should be mindful of sharp iron edges on the wreckage, swell that can pick up over the shallow site, and a restricted area that has been reported around parts of it.
