About this site

Crystal Bay sits on the west side of Nusa Penida, an island southeast of Bali reached by boat from Sanur or Padang Bai. The site is a pinnacle over a reef bottom, reaching a maximum depth of around 40 metres, and is rated an advanced dive due to medium currents that can shift quickly and produce surge, swell, and thermoclines. Visibility here is generally great. The bay is best known in the region for occasional sightings of Mola mola, the ocean sunfish, which pass through the cooler waters around Nusa Penida during certain months, alongside eagle rays, manta rays, tuna, bannerfish, clownfish, nudibranchs, and mantis shrimp. Divers have also reported reef sharks, wobbegongs, frogfish, seahorses, napoleon wrasse, barracuda, and dolphins, along with downcurrents and cold thermoclines at depth. Depths here range from shallow coral in the bay itself down to steeper drop-offs further out.
