About this site
HMS Culloden was a British 74-gun ship of the line that ran aground off Montauk Point on the eastern tip of Long Island in 1781 while chasing a French fleet during the American Revolutionary War. The crew refloated what they could and burned the hull to keep it from capture, leaving wreckage scattered in the shallows near what is now called Culloden Point. The site lies close to shore in Fort Pond Bay and is more a scattered debris and ballast site than an intact hull, with cannon and fittings recovered over the years. Depths are shallow, generally in the range of a recreational shore or small boat dive, making it accessible but of more interest for its history than for reef life or wreck structure.
