About this site
Daedalus Reef is an isolated reef system in the central Red Sea, well offshore from the Marsa Alam coast and marked by a lighthouse on its plateau, reached only by liveaboard. The reef reaches a maximum depth of around 40 metres, is built on a reef bottom, and is rated an advanced dive because of the strong currents that run along its exposed walls. Grouper and manta rays are regularly encountered here, and divers have also reported oceanic whitetip and hammerhead sharks, along with tiger and thresher sharks, whale sharks, barracuda, snapper, trevally, tuna, unicornfish, wrasse, Napoleon wrasse, and clownfish. Its remote position and depth add to the challenge, and strong current remains the main hazard divers note at the site.
