About this site
De Rat is a wreck dive in the Grevelingenmeer, the large saltwater lake in Zeeland that formed after the estuary was dammed off from the North Sea. Scharendijke, on the lake's northern shore, is one of the main dive centres for the area, and several wrecks and artificial reef structures have been sunk in the lake specifically for recreational diving. The Grevelingenmeer is known for calm, current-free conditions and good visibility for Dutch waters, since it is a still, tideless body of water rather than open sea. De Rat itself reaches a maximum depth of around 12 metres and is rated a beginner dive, fitting the lake's reputation as a popular training and club diving area.
