About this site
Galle sits on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka, a historic port town known for its fortified old town and surrounding reefs and shoals. The waters off this coast have long been a hazard for shipping, with several wrecks scattered along the approaches to the harbor, and the Earl of Shaftesbury is one of them, resting on a wreck bottom at a maximum depth of around 15 metres. It is rated a beginner dive, making it accessible to divers with limited experience. Divers have reported barracuda, batfish, girdled reefgoby, green sea turtles, grouper, orangestripe triggerfish, reef-flat cardinalfish, snapper, and sweetlips around the wreck.
