About this site

The Elbow is a reef dive site located at the southern tip of Turneffe Atoll, Belize, named for the point where two currents converge. That meeting of currents funnels large numbers of sea creatures through the site, making it one of the most popular dive destinations in the atoll.

The site features beautiful walls and reaches a maximum depth of 36.6 metres. The converging currents produce strong water movement, and because of the exposed location the site is best attempted on a calm day; it is rated advanced.

The abundance of passing marine life is the main draw: divers regularly encounter rays, eels, sharks, turtles, large schools of fish, barracuda, Atlantic spadefish, and dolphins. Hundreds of sea creatures can be seen moving through on a single dive.

The Elbow is a boat dive, reached approximately 15 minutes by boat from the Turneffe Atoll area. Strong current is a defining characteristic of the site and is the primary reason it is reserved for advanced divers.
