Five Caves at Makena Landing

Five Caves at Makena Landing, also called Turtle Town or Five Graves, is a lava reef dive off Makena on Maui. It runs to about 45 feet (14 m) on the outer reaches and suits beginner to intermediate divers.

The entry is about a minute's walk from the parking lot, with restrooms and a shower nearby. Go to the right side of the beach and follow the reef on your right as you look out to sea. The site is on the south side of the point, and fingers of lava form the reef system.

You find caves, arches to swim through, Hawaiian green sea turtles and whitetip sharks. The Bubble Cave is a lava tube in about 12 feet (3.7 m) of water that runs back around 50 feet to a chamber where you can surface, take your regulator out and feel the air squeeze and the water mist as the surge comes and goes. Turtles hang out inside along with whitetip sharks.
