About this site
The Gluckauf was a German steam tanker that ran aground off Fire Island, New York, in 1893, becoming one of the earliest oil tankers wrecked on the American coast. It lies broken up in shallow water not far from shore, in a section of the wreck field along this stretch of Long Island's South Shore. Because it sits close to the beach in relatively shallow depths, it is accessible to divers with modest experience, though surge and surf conditions off Fire Island can complicate the dive. Little of the original hull remains intact, with scattered plating and structure more typical of what divers encounter there than a coherent ship shape.
