About this site
The USS San Diego was an armored cruiser of the United States Navy that sank in 1918 off Fire Island, New York, after striking a mine laid by a German submarine during World War I, making it one of the larger American warship losses of that war. The wreck lies on its side in roughly 100 to 115 feet of water on the sea floor south of Long Island, and its size and depth mean it is generally considered a dive for experienced divers with wreck training. Divers typically explore its hull, gun mounts, and superstructure, which remain largely intact despite decades underwater. Currents and depth in this stretch of the Atlantic add to the challenge of the site.
