About this site
Gruta lies off Porto Santo, the smaller and drier island of the Madeira archipelago, in the Atlantic northeast of Madeira proper. The name translates to grotto or cave, pointing to a site along the island's volcanic rocky coastline where swim-throughs and overhangs have formed in the rock. It is rated a beginner dive, reaching a maximum depth of around 26 metres. Divers have reported barracuda, eagle rays, frogfish, grouper, mackerel, manta rays, seahorses, and tuna around the site.
