About this site
The Poor Knights Islands sit off the coast of Matapouri in Northland, New Zealand, a marine reserve formed from volcanic rock roughly 20 kilometres offshore. The islands are known for their underwater arches, tunnels and caves carved into the rhyolite cliffs, along with subtropical fish life carried in by warm currents from the north. Dutchman's Cave and similar named formations around the islands are part of this broader system of swim-throughs and cavern features that draw divers to the reserve.
