About this site
Hin Daeng means red rock, named for the cloak of pink and red soft coral that covers it, and it is one of a pair of remote pinnacles in open water south of Koh Lanta, usually dived together with its neighbour Hin Muang. Only a small part of the rock shows above the surface, while below it the walls plunge past recreational depth into the blue. Those exposed walls act as a magnet for pelagics. Reef mantas patrol the site, and in season it is one of the better bets in Thailand for a whale shark, alongside schooling barracuda, trevally and the occasional leopard shark on the reef. The soft coral and the fish life together make it a genuinely big-animal dive. This is an exposed, open-ocean site reached only by day boat or liveaboard, and it often carries current and surface swell. With the depth and the exposure, Hin Daeng is best suited to experienced divers, and it is most rewarding in the calmer months of the northern season.
