Hin Muang

Hin Muang means purple rock, and the name is earned: the pinnacle is smothered in purple and pink soft coral along a wall that drops further than almost anywhere else divers visit in Thailand. It lies just south of Hin Daeng in open Andaman water, and the two are almost always run as a pair on the same trip. The site is essentially a long ridge falling away into deep blue, and it draws the same pelagic traffic as its neighbour. Reef mantas and, in season, whale sharks cruise the drop-off, while barracuda, trevally and batfish hold in the current and the wall itself is a dense carpet of colour for its whole length. Depth, exposure and current all point the same way here. Hin Muang sits far offshore with no shelter, the current can run hard with up and down movement along the wall, and the reef falls quickly past sport-diving limits, so it is firmly an advanced dive.
