About this site
HMS Hermes was the world's first ship purpose-built as an aircraft carrier, launched in 1919 for the Royal Navy. She was sunk by Japanese carrier aircraft in April 1942 off the east coast of Sri Lanka, near Batticaloa, in one of the heaviest losses of the campaign in the Indian Ocean. The wreck lies off Maḍakalapuva at a maximum depth of around 20 metres and is rated an advanced dive. Her large hull and flight deck structure make her one of the more significant carrier wrecks accessible to divers, though the site still demands solid experience rather than suiting casual visitors.
