Huron

The Huron is the wreck of a US Navy iron-hulled gunboat that sank in a storm off Nags Head, North Carolina, in 1877, with significant loss of life among her crew. She now lies broken up in shallow water not far from the Outer Banks shoreline, with a maximum depth of around 7.6 metres over a bottom of scattered wreckage. Despite the shallow depth the site is rated advanced, largely due to the surf and current conditions common along this stretch of coast, and divers should be mindful of sharp debris scattered through the site. Grouper have been spotted using the structure as habitat. The wreck is more a debris field than an intact hull at this point, encrusted with marine growth, and is often dived alongside other nearby wrecks in the area, giving it historical significance as an early example of federal efforts to protect shipwreck sites.
