About this site
The Triangle Wrecks are two wrecks, the Kyzikes and the Carl Gerhard, lying on the same spot off the Outer Banks. Two ships wrecked in one place, years apart, which is part of the draw. Maximum depth is about 7.6 m (20 to 25 ft), and the dive is rated beginner.
Entry is from the shore through the surf, with a fairly short swim out. Expect a walk across the beach and moderate fitness. Keep the gear light, with a single tank and no heavy steel cylinders. A reel is a good idea, and a 3mm full wetsuit is recommended because wrecks have sharp edges.
Enter at slack tide, and note that mid-morning during summer high pressure weather often gives the best dives. Summer visibility is often 15 to 20 ft (4.5 to 6 m). Sea life on the wrecks is abundant and nurse sharks are often seen. For the return, you can set a compass west and swim underwater part of the way, which shows more sea life and extends the dive.
