About this site
On October 14, 1893, she was carrying a load of coal in tow of the steamer F. E. Spinner. The boats encountered a violent storm and the steamer cut her loose. The captain of the Merrill tried to seek safety but ran up on Holdridge Shoal near the De Tour Passage entry, stranding the crew for 24 hrs before rescue. The anchor is found in 30 ft of water, following the chain will take divers to the keelsons at 65 ft. Divers can see many small artifacts like tools, ship's hardware and personal effects in addition to the capstan and windlass. Lies in about 24.4 m; sank 1893.
