Run down by the William H. Mack in a thick fog, the Mitchell heeled over enough that a boom caught on the Mack, holding the vessels together. This allowed the crew time to lay a ladder across, and most reached safety this way. Six others launched the lifeboat, only to be overturned by the suction of the sinking Mitchell, but all were eventually recovered. Only three went down with the coal-laden vessel, which lies inverted on the bottom. Lies in about 38.1 m; sank 1911.
