The Joseph S. Fay lies in northern Lake Michigan near the Straits of Mackinac region off the Michigan coast, an area long used as a shipping route between the upper and lower Great Lakes and the site of numerous vessel losses over the years. The wreck sits at a maximum depth of around 18 metres and is rated a technical dive here. It is broken up, with a damaged bow, a destroyed engine, and a missing stern, and divers have reported monofilament fishing line and fishing gear caught around the railing.
