Anna Smith

The Anna Smith was a wooden steamer that began leaking and was run aground off Cordwood Point in November 1889. After the 2nd mate was lost while trying to reach shore on a raft to report the wreck, the crew spent a cold night waiting for rescue. They started a fire in the coal bunker to keep warm, but neglected to extinguish the fire when they were taken off by a tug a day later. The fire grew and consumed the entire vessel above the waterline. Much machinery was recovered, but her boilers and lower timbers remain, and can be accessed from shore. The Ann Smith's captain, Timese Lamay, was also captain of the Eber Ward when it was cut by ice in the Straits in 1909, making him the only captain to lose two vessels in the Straits of Mackinac. Lies in about 4.6 m; sank 1889.
