About this site
The Kreidsee is a flooded former chalk quarry near Hemmoor in Lower Saxony, Germany, close to the Oste river in the Cuxhaven district. Quarrying there left a deep pit that filled with water after operations ended, and the white chalk walls give the lake its striking pale color, which is how it earned its reputation as a freshwater dive site well inland from the North Sea coast. It reaches a maximum depth of around 20 metres and is rated a beginner site, making it a popular training and leisure spot for divers in the region.
