About this site
La Girona was a galleass of the Spanish Armada that wrecked in 1588 off the coast of County Antrim, near the Giant's Causeway on the north coast of Northern Ireland, while attempting to sail back to Spain around the British Isles after the failed invasion of England. The wreck was carrying survivors from other lost Armada ships when it went down on the rocks at Lacada Point, with heavy loss of life. Its remains were located and excavated in the 1960s, yielding a well known haul of gold and artifacts now held in the Ulster Museum. The site lies in an exposed stretch of water along a rugged basalt coastline shaped by the same volcanic activity as the Causeway itself.
