Las 3 Piedras lies along the Caribbean coastline of Magdalena department, in the stretch of coast near Santa Marta known for its rocky points and small bays. Here the Sierra Nevada foothills run down to the sea, giving rise to the rocky outcrops that give the reef site its name.
