About this site
Le Roraima lies off St. Pierre on the northwest coast of Martinique, in the French Caribbean. She was a French passenger and cargo steamer caught at anchor in the harbor when Mount Pelée erupted in May 1902, and the eruption's pyroclastic blast and fires destroyed the ship along with most of the town. The wreck now sits broken up on a slope, with sections descending to a verified maximum depth of around 50 metres, which puts the deeper parts of the site in advanced diving territory. Divers typically encounter boilers, hull plating, and other scattered machinery rather than an intact hull, reflecting the violence of how she was lost.
