About this site
Saint-Pierre sits on the northwest coast of Martinique, beneath the slopes of Mont Pelée, and the bay off the old town holds a number of wrecks from the ships anchored there when the volcano erupted in 1902. The waterfront town was once the island's main port and cultural capital before the eruption destroyed it, and several of the vessels caught in the harbor at the time sank close to shore. The site lies within Martinique's Caribbean coastal waters, a short distance offshore from the present-day town, with the shallowest of the wrecks reachable to about 6 metres and rated a beginner dive. Divers have also reported bull sharks passing through the bay here.
