About this site
Los Islotes is a small rocky islet group at the northern end of Isla Partida, near La Paz in the Gulf of California, and forms part of the Espiritu Santo archipelago. It is best known for its resident colony of California sea lions, which divers and snorkelers commonly encounter at close range, especially the younger animals that tend to be playful around bubbles and cameras. The site is a mix of rocky reef and boulders with sea fans and reef fish typical of the Sea of Cortez, with a maximum depth of around 30 metres and visibility usually great. It is rated a beginner dive, and divers have also reported barracuda, dolphins, eagle rays, mobula rays, parrotfish, pufferfish, surgeonfish, and even whales and whale sharks passing through. The site is closed each year from June 1 to September 1 to protect the sea lions during their breeding season.
