About this site
Martins Haven is a shore dive inside the Skomer Marine Nature Reserve, and it is regarded as one of the deepest and most rewarding shore dives in the UK. The protected status means the marine life is abundant. The dive is graded advanced, with a maximum depth of 30 metres.
Diving is strictly prohibited near the boat jetty, so divers surface swim past it and descend on the shot line. On the left-hand route the rock wall stays on the left as the reef passes over soft sand and rocky outcrops. At roughly 12 to 18 metres, depending on the tide, a loose lobster pot lies on the seabed with a Pink Sea Fan directly above it.
Conditions are subject to swell on northerly winds, and the currents pick up as the tide changes. A surface marker buoy is essential because of the heavy boat traffic. Kelp-covered rocks can be slippery at low tide.
