About this site

Masjid Raya sits along the shoreline of Ternate Island in North Maluku, a volcanic island historically tied to the spice trade and dominated by Mount Gamalama. The site is reached by a short boat trip from the town of Ternate, in the strait separating the island from Halmahera, where steep volcanic slopes drop toward the water. It reaches a maximum depth of around 30 metres.
