About this site
Mayor Island, also known as Tuhua, is a dormant volcanic island in the Bay of Plenty, off the coast of New Zealand's North Island near Tauranga. Its surrounding waters are formed from volcanic rock, and the reef dive sites around the island are typically reached by boat from Tauranga or Whakatane, with depths reaching around 30 metres. The island itself is a scenic and forest reserve with a history tied to Maori settlement and obsidian quarrying. Divers exploring the reef here have reported barracuda, trevally, jacks, nudibranchs, sea turtles, and even dolphins passing through.
