Mokule'ia lies along the northwest coast of Maui, near the marine life conservation district at Honolua Bay. This stretch of coastline sits below steep, undeveloped slopes and faces the channel toward Molokai, with the district's protected status limiting shoreline development and fishing. The dive here is rated beginner, making it an approachable entry point for exploring this part of the coast. The reef is built on cauliflower and rice coral with humped coral heads scattered through it, and divers commonly encounter saddle wrasse, belted wrasse, blackfin chromis, dusky surgeonfish, manybar goatfish, and Hawaiian spotted tobies moving through the coral structure.
