About this site
Monastery Beach sits along the Carmel coast in California, just south of Carmel River State Beach near Point Lobos. It is a shore diving site known for a steep drop off directly from the sand into deep water, which lets divers reach depths quickly without a boat, with dives here generally staying within about 7.6 metres. The beach is also known for its heavy shorebreak, which makes entries and exits difficult and has led to it being nicknamed among divers for the challenge involved. Because of that surf and the sudden depth close to shore, it is generally considered a site for experienced divers who can handle surge and a demanding entry.
