The New Orleans wreck lies in Lake Huron off the Michigan coast near Alpena, within the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, an area known for its concentration of well-preserved shipwrecks in cold freshwater. The site reaches a maximum depth of around 45 metres and is rated a technical dive. The depth and the cold, dark conditions typical of this part of Lake Huron put it well beyond casual wreck diving, drawing divers equipped and trained for deep freshwater technical work.
