Nordmeer

The Nordmeer is a German freighter that ran aground on a shoal near Thunder Bay in 1966 while carrying steel cargo, eventually breaking apart and sinking in the years after. It lies in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary near Alpena, Michigan, with wreckage scattered across a range of depths from shallow sections near the surface down to around 20 metres or more on the deeper parts of the site. Cold fresh water has kept much of the structure well preserved, and divers commonly see the boilers, hull plating, and other machinery still recognizable on the bottom. The shallower portions can be dived by less experienced divers, but the deeper, more broken sections and the site's exposure to wind and wave action make parts of it better suited to more experienced wreck divers.
