About this site
The Nordmeer is a German freighter that ran aground on a shoal near Thunder Bay in 1966 while carrying steel cargo, eventually breaking apart and sinking in the years after. It lies in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary near Alpena, Michigan, with wreckage scattered across a range of depths. Cold fresh water has kept much of the structure well preserved, and divers commonly see the boilers, hull plating, and other machinery still recognizable on the bottom.
