About this site
Nine Mile Reef lies off the KwaZulu-Natal coast of South Africa, in the Nomvunya area near Sodwana Bay, one of the reef systems reached by boat launches from that shore. This stretch of coastline sits within the broader iSimangaliso Wetland Park marine area, known for its offshore reef formations along the Indian Ocean. The reef bottom here tops out at around 19.5 metres and is rated a beginner dive. Divers have reported a wide range of life on the reef, including angelfish, butterflyfish, fusiliers, snapper, triggerfish, and grouper, along with less common sightings such as frogfish, rhinopias, pipefish, and nudibranchs. Larger animals reported here include manta rays, sea turtles, moray eels, and sharks ranging from reef and bull sharks to hammerheads.
