About this site
Northern Pinnacles is part of Aliwal Shoal, a fossilized dune reef off the KwaZulu-Natal coast of South Africa, near Umkomaas south of Durban. Aliwal Shoal is well known as a shark diving destination, with ragged-tooth sharks aggregating seasonally along the reef system and the chance of encountering blacktip and other reef sharks. The reef sits in warm Agulhas current waters, and the pinnacle formations at this end of the shoal add relief to the otherwise low-lying rocky structure. Depths across Aliwal Shoal generally range from around 6 to 30 metres, with current and swell conditions varying enough that experience is often recommended.
