About this site
Raggies Cave is a reef dive on Aliwal Shoal with a maximum depth of 18 metres, and it is the most popular dive site on the shoal. It is a rock formation filled with caves, overhangs and gullies, and the reef carries large deposits of hard coral rather than soft coral.
It is the best place on the shoal to watch ragged tooth sharks during the shark season. Entry into the cave is not permitted while the sharks are present, but there is a viewing area at the entrance where divers can kneel and watch them safely. Once the sharks have gone, the sand is a good place to look for sharks' teeth, which are the only items divers are allowed to take from the shoal.
The sand patch in front of the cave is sheltered from the overhead currents. Resident potato bass sit in the surrounding overhangs, and many types of moray eel live there.
