About this site
The wreck at these coordinates is HMS Pandora, the Royal Navy frigate sent to capture the Bounty mutineers, which struck the outer Great Barrier Reef and sank in 1791 off the northern Queensland coast. The site lies well offshore in the far northern reef, well beyond normal recreational range from the mainland, and has been the subject of extensive archaeological survey work rather than routine sport diving. Depths at the wreck are considerable, generally cited in the 30 to 35 metre range, which combined with its remote location makes it a site reached mainly by dedicated expedition or research trips rather than standard dive charters. Because of its historical significance, access has at times been restricted to protect the site from disturbance.
