Pewabic

The Pewabic was a Great Lakes passenger and freight steamer that sank in 1865 after colliding with her sister ship, the Meteor, in Lake Huron off Thunder Bay near Alpena, Michigan. The collision and sinking were rapid, and the wreck has long attracted salvage attempts due to reports of cargo including copper ore. She now rests broken on the lake bed at depths of around 40 to 55 metres, cold and dark like much of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Visibility can be good given the fresh, cold water, but the depth and low temperatures make this a dive suited to experienced, often technical divers rather than casual recreational divers.
