Protea Banks Northern Shark Caves lies off the KwaZulu-Natal coast near Shelly Beach and Margate, on South Africa's southern coast, reached by boat from Shelly Beach out to a reef system a few kilometres offshore. The area is known among divers for shark encounters, and the northern section features overhangs and cave-like structures cut into the reef that give the site its name. Access is via surf launches typical of the KwaZulu-Natal coast, and the site is rated an advanced dive.
